More often than not Internet users find themselves in a situation where they need to hide their IP-address. For example, when access to some website or other is suddenly banned, but you still need to visit it. to send anonymous messages, to restrict access to certain websites, to connect several computers to one IP-address.

What is proxy

Proxy is an intermediary between a computer and systems of Internet servers.

In simpler terms it is a kind of remote computer assistant that helps the subscriber to access the Internet.

The principle of operation is as follows: after connecting to the proxy server the subscriber sends their request there. the latter is located on a different server so the proxy server facilitates connection to the desired server then depending on whether it has its own cash it either returns a response from the server or gets the corresponding resource

Why use proxy server

Why would an average user of the Internet need proxy? At this moment they are used to hide their actual IP address. the most common reasons to use proxy are:

  • A necessity to visit a website which is restricted to your country or your IP;
  • the need to send an anonymous message;
  • to protect a network or a local computer from viruses and network attacks;
  • securing confidential information from third parties;
  • Connecting several laptops or computers to one network address. External machines will calculate data about the intermediary, but they will not be able to calculate information about local computers;
  • to restrict access to certain sites and web resources. It is popular among businesses and companies, as it helps to control the workflow;
  • save traffic. Since the data received from the Internet is transmitted to the client in compressed form;
  • reduce Network load so that all users can get the necessary data on time and without delay. To do this, files are sent to the CACHE and saved on the proxy server.

What is the difference between proxy and VPN

A lot of users notice that VPN and proxy have the same functionality. The goal in the same – keep the anonymity of the user. Despite that, the principal of operation is significantly different.

VPN works over your chosen Network and is, basically, a private network. So when you use Virtual Private Network and connect online, connection to the other server is encrypted. Neither the provider nor other services can find out which sites have you visited. Also no one is able to find the address and location of your IP.

Proxy is just another service, acting as another computer between you and the server of the website that you interested in. You don't connect to the network, you let your data through external server. Every user has their own IP-address proxy, this guarantees that your account will not be blocked.

Differences:

  • VPN is connected through a virtual network, where proxy is connected through a different server;
  • Proxy solves more problems;
  • Proxy is cheaper;
  • Proxy works faster;
  • Proxy works without interruptions.

Types of proxy services

Proxy servers are divided into several more popular types:

Http proxy

Http – is the most popular type of proxy servers used to solve many problems, is loved by many for versatility and ease of operation. It is recommended to use for organization of work of browsers, apps, programs which operate on HTTP. Method of functioning is very simple: user's browser send a request to HTTP-service for getting access to certain URL-address. Then the request is sent to the correct address by server's initiative, the later send the user a reply.

Main advantages:

  • You can save images and files which were uploaded during session: photo, video, texts. Next they need to be uploaded from cache to save traffic and increase page loading speed;
  • You can create a black list of pages and sites in order to restrict user's access. Relevant for major companies;
  • Possible to decrease Internet speed to selected users;
  • It is allowed to keep logs;
  • Safe;
  • Grants anonymity.

Important! Actually, there is no guarantee of total anonymity. If they want to, hackers can get user's personal information.

https proxy

Very similar to the abovementioned HTTP, but has more advantages for those who what to exchange top-secret information, or just doesn't want their information to be known. For example, bank card numbers, social media logins and passwords etc.

  • Safe type with very high probability that no one could access the data you're passing. All information is encrypted with sophisticated security algorithms.
  • All pages, that you visit, are being cached.

Socks proxy

In 2020 this is the most innovative proxy-server. A lot of programmers think so because of high level of security of this type of proxy. All the information that you send is securely encrypted. Socks is a translator, located among applied and transport levels. Thanks to that Socks isn't tied to higher level protocols. It suitable for programs that operate on TCP and UDP. The protocol allows them to get access to various network resources for the apps that have any restrictions.

Important. There are 2 versions. Socks 4 and Socks 5, they are a little different from each other, but not substantially. Both version work without interruptions.

Advantages:

  • Real IP address of the client is encrypted, no one has access to it.
  • Can work with multiple rpotocols;
  • When using Socks anonymity significantly increases/

Open, anonymous and regular

Depending on lever of encryption, HTTP can be divided into the following types:

  • Open proxy give out information that the user is using proxy. Real IP is shwed in the HTTP headings. They are risky to use, because the don't guarantee real anonymity. They are usually the proxy that can be used by any user online. For example, to open some site, or access some recourses etc;
  • Anonymous are also open. They transfer information that they're using proxy. However, the user's IP-address is not shown. We can't talk about reall anonymity, but the level of user's information security and higher than open proxy.
  • Elite proxy conceal the information about proxy-server being used, also they don't show information about real IP-address of a client. If you need total anonymity, only use elite proxy.

Proxy work speed

Speed of work is lower when using proxy-servers. This is because traffic has to go through another service. The direct request doesn't go through an additional service. For example, open proxy are used if Internet speed isn't important, like when getting access to a resource, etc.

Important! Some sites and services restrict using their recourses through proxy-servers, since this may entail a violation of the law and the obligations of users in the Network. This is due to the fact that many feel impunity when they sit through a proxy.

How to use proxy

All you need for this to work is already in your system, so using proxy is relatively easy. There are several means for work:

  • Globally: setup Network;
  • Locally: program setup, for example browser.

Global method is not entirely global. On Windows there are no setting for global proxy. So we can only set this up for the apps and programs that use Internet Explorer proxy settings.

Find open proxy-server. It is easy enough, just enter a search “List of proxy”. There are a lot og sites with such lists, so there are no difficulties choosing one. Some sites post relevant proxy for free, but there is also a possibility to download lists with a special program: filter by country, find out speed beforehand, determine the convenience of working with the proxy. The most convenient but expensive option is to purchase the service on special resources.
